I have no voice, but that doesn’t stop me! Encouraged by an email asking when I was getting back to the podcasts, I spend the last few scraps of my voice (which is pretty much gone now) sharing my thoughts post-Little Shop of Horrors.

I also discuss a new possible podcast idea. Be sure to share your thoughts, because as this episode proves, even one email can motivate me to churn out another of these.

Fruitcast #20 - My Little Princess

For my 20th podcast, and my 1000th post to my blog (according to Wordpress), I have a special world exclusive interview with Australian Princess auditionee, Becky!

Back at her home in Brisbane, Becky and her partner Rebecca join me over Skype to chat about the audition process (we are keeping our fingers crossed), as well as other celebrity (mostly C-grade) scandal and gossip, while I munch rather noisily into a pizza.

I apologise for the bad levels in this podcast, but the setup required me to just pick a mix and go with it, judging as I went through the headphones.

Vidcast #2 - Moving Fingers

As most of you have never seen or heard me play piano before, I thought it might be an interesting experiment for a mini-video podcast if I tacked together a few bits of pieces of my playing. My iBook wasn’t really up to the task though, and the video it captured was rather pathetic. The good news is the download is only 2 megs!

I made a few mistakes in the playing, but I only recorded each once and I wanted to portray my real playing standard, mistakes and all.

Bonus points if you can name which musicals each of the three clips come from.

Well all of them seem to come from internet world, all giving an “error - 404 not found” style sound to them.

..you may want to fix that :)

I guess it’s thanks to AJ for getting the link to work. Strange things happened to my computer this afternoon when I was trying to view this.

I have no idea what musicals the pieces were from, but I enjoyed them. I am jealous in the way all people who can’t play piano are of talented pianists.

Short clips like this one every now and then would definitely supplement the normal podcasts - maybe even do one as part of one of your podcasts one day.

I was really tired when I sorted it out, so stupid me. Now it seems all those on my podcast RSS would have given up on it. No dramas, one change to the entry and everyone gets it again!

Kevin - I’m glad you enjoyed it. I’m very interested in doing more short videos like this. I think short is probably the way to go. Leave extended commentary to audio.

The second clip sounds like one of the ones on the Vince Guaraldi Charlie Brown’s Christmas album I have, though I’d be foolish to actually make a guess.

Musicals aren’t really my strong point :P. The third one could just as easily be from Charlie Brown too :P.

I think this has been up long enough for you to post answers :P.

okay the first one is happiness is from Charlie Brown, and the last one is And They’re Off from A New Brain, one of my favorite musicals of all time!

Older Podcasts now available

One of the benefits of the new server I moved onto the other week was that I now have room to store all my podcasts online. I finally took advantage of that last night, so now all 19 podcasts and one video cast should be available online for you perusal. Things have changed a lot since the earlier shows, so perhaps now you can go back and check out a missed show, or revisit one of your favourites.

If there are any problems, let me know.

Fruitcast #19 - The Year of the Podcast

Back in the Phyllis Upp Memorial Studios, I take a few minutes to talk about what has been going on so far this year, and my hopes for the podcast for the future. I also play a “special guest appearance” by ex-podcaster, Jeremy Wetherald.

Please note that this is not an MP3 file, but an AAC file, to be played on iTunes, Quicktime or your iPod (amongst other players). If this causes major dramas, let me know and I will explore other options. It does however, give me a nicer sound at the same file size.

Also, this is an Enhanced Podcast, meaning when you play it in one of the above mentioned players, as long as they are up to date, it will feature a few graphics which change throughout the program. Not all that useful for today’s show, but I thought I’d play around with it anyway.

Hey! Thanks for making the podcast enhanced; nice to be able to move forward and back through the chapters.

The new intro music is great; love it. The audio quality is excellent too.

Geeking out: it IS possible to make IE work with alpha-blended PNGs, but it’s horrific. The good news is that IE will support alpha-PNGs in Vista (so forty-two years or so, and everyone can view PNG files). One technicality; Firefox doesn’t have full support for PNGs either; only KHTML browsers (like Safari do) support the embedded colour profiles (can be a real pain, but it’s part of the PNG spec).

As for capturing video from your webcam, just use iMovie’s camera capture mode.

A short aside; aren’t you a *20* year old now? Fix your damn tagline :P.

I must say that the audio quality of this podcast was a lot better than the rest of them and was that a hint of preparedness to broadcast that I could hear in your voice?

I think I may need to update my Itunes to benefit from the enhanced podcasts, but that is in hand now.

The idea of a video podcast is a good one - I enjoyed the bridgewalk one you did a few weeks ago, but of course you may be hard pressed to find enough interesting things to video yourself in front of on a regular basis. Special event videcasts might be the go for that concept and stick to the usual audio treat for regular podcasts.

Kit - Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed it, and as usual your wonderful technical knowledge. I suspect the enhanced podcast function will be even better with more structured episodes. You may have guessed, but this episode was produced using the new GarageBand Podcast studio which makes the creation of enhanced podcast an absolute breeze.

And I’ll work on fixing the tagline… Now, is that in feedburner, or wordpress? :)

Kevin - Thank you for your comment regarding the improved sound quality. I like it too, I’m glad it wasn’t too big a hassle to deal with the different format for PC users. I also agree with you, videos are for special events, because they take a long time to produce.

But I must ask, what do you mean by “preparedness to broadcast” in my voice?

And just generally, I won’t be using the audio gate on the microphone (which basically turns off the mic when it drops below a sound level), because it creates an awful effect, particularly if you’re listening with headphones.

I noticed that audio gating; it was a little infuriating. With the way you do podcasts, you can sometimes get the impression you’re talking to the audience on the phone and complete radio silence sounds like it’s dropped out.
