From the Back Row

It’s confession time everyone. There probably isn’t a person alive without a video or two in their closet they’d rather not mention. There really isn’t any reason to be ashamed. It’s perfectly normal. You may try and hide it when guests come over and stay, but sooner or later someone is going to be rumaging through your closet, lay their hands on a crusty old ex-rental, yank it out to examine in plain sight of everyone and declare, “Why the hell do you have a copy of The Birds: Part II?”
C’mon, it’s time for everyone to share those VHS/DVD titles on their shelves they would rather few people know about. I’ll go first:
1. Multiplicity - Starring Michael Keaton, Michael Keaton, Michael Keaton and Michael Keaton. Oh, and Andy McDowell but who cares. There are very few moments that work in this movie, and the whole thing seems extraordinarily ‘faux-science’ just like Jurrasic Park. You know, with the bubbling beakers sitting next to expensive laptops just doing WinAmp visualisation stuff.
2. Gladiator - Christmas present. Never watched. Bored poopless. Actually, the same goes for the second and third Matrix movies. I don’t think I’ve even cracked open the third one.
3. Friday the 13th Part IX: Jason Goes To Hell - Sure, no one gets any flack for owning The Man With The Golden Gun (the ninth 007 film), but the ninth Jason really is taking it a bit far.
4. War of the Worlds - I’m DVD-sitting it. Honestly it’s not mine.
On another note… what is sitting on your shelf waiting watching. It must be movies you’ve never seen before. For me its (in no particular order) most of the Jasons, Elm streets 2 and 3, Alfie, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Terminator 2, Mars Attacks, Alfie (remake), Toy Story 2, Halloween 2, some of the Planet of the Apes, City Under The Sea, Grey Gardens, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Outland, The Great Gatsby, Frenzy, Psycho IV, Delicatessen, M, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Bad Education, Before Night Falls and The Childrens Hour. That’s not including the ones I know I’ll never watch. As you can see, I’ve got a little to keep me busy.
Now it’s your turn. Use these guidelines or make up your own. I don’t care, I’m not your mother (in most cases).

One word - Evolution. Even though I’ve seen it on TV, I haven’t had the guts to open the video that I got given by Chloe on one birthday. And yes I know Chloe/Dave reads this. I have an excuse though - I don’t have a video player.

Whenit comes to buying DVD/Videos, I only ever fork out good money on movies I really want to watch and I refuse to let anyone give me any as gifts for fear that one day I may be forced to watch them when they visit.
If I think a movie may be a bit dodgy, I usually wait till it hits one of the free to air movie channels then record it and watch it before deciding to go out and buy it. That explains how I ended up with the Digimon movie.
Currently sitting on my shelf unwatched are The Phantom Of The Opera DVD (a bit of a ripoff since it only has one disc and very little blurby stuff on the cover), Joseph And The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat (with 70’s heart throb Donny Osmond), the 1933 King Kong in a beautiful tin box (two DVDs with documentaries and interviews with Peter Jackson about his overlong remake) and the restored version of Fritz Langs Metropolis.
I am hoping that the War Of The Worlds you are DVD sitting is the Tom Cruise one because I’d hate to think you wouldn’t watch the 1950’s George Pal version.

AJ - I remember Evolution being played at that disasterous school camp when the crappers went out. Remember that one? It was icey cold and we all huddled in the one room with a fire? I have a grudge against that movie for that reason. And yeah, what’s with VHS?
Kevin - The Digimon movie? That’s a nice addition to the list. As for your unwatched, I haven’t seen Phantom (the music makes me cringe), but I have seen that Joseph, and it’s not too bad as far as Joseph goes (it’s another show I dearly dislike). Look out for Joan Collins on the piano mining badly. DO check out the similar video remake of Jesus Christ Superstar which, despite a tacky production, features some extremely talented performers, particularly the guy playing Judas who’s name escapes me right now.
And yes, the War of the Worlds is the Tom Cruise / Scientology / Footprints on the white leather sofa one.

What’s wrong with Gladiator? I like that movie. Can’t understand a bloody word of what telephone-chuker (what’s his name?) says though.
And while I liked War of the Worlds… yes, I would ashamed to have that in my collection too.
My baddies are… no, I have no bad movies in my collection :)
